The TV

In my 2nd year of college, my parents had decided to replace our TV.

It was 20 years old, almost as old as me. A small maroon rectangle, which stood on a table at the corner of the hall. In my childhood I would often sit in front of it for hours forever entertained by that little black screen.

A few years later, it would become my portal to the world of Marvel heroes, cringey rom-coms and strong female protagonists. But those days are long gone.

Now, it has discovered its position in the background, to cover the awkward silences during dinner. I was okay with it, me and my parents didn't really talk much. No one ever watches the TV, but it is there, it still works just like it did years before. But we all got our own devices to keep us entertained. It is pretty much useless, we could have thrown it away earlier, but no one ever questioned its position.

It held a sort of power in the house, it was almost a part of the family, as much as I was.

When the new TV came in, it was everything my old one wasn’t, sleek, colourful and loud; but the day we called for it to be picked up, something snapped in me…the world around me had changed, we moved city, after city, after city but, it-it had always been there for me to go back to.

It's comforting low-quality speakers always eased my nerves on the morning of my exams. I grew up with it, and I grew old with it, seeing it go broke my heart a little. Everything has a time for it to stop being a part of the house, a time to grow old and leave. Just like how I would, it was its turn to retire now.
